About The Texas Medical Center

Initially founded by the United States Government in 1944 when President Roosevelt authorized the establishment of a 1,000 bed Naval hospital on 118 acres of land purchased from the Hermann estate, the Texas Medical Center is now the largest medical complex in the world.   Soon after the Texas Legislature approved a cancer treatment center which was supported by matching funds from the MD Anderson Foundation.    Rapidly expansion and development followed and today the Texas Medical Center now has 58 member institutions and 21 hospitals.   The massive clinical & educational infrastructure attracts thousands of international visitors and patients yearly, employing at least 105,000+.   That's 20,000+ physicians and other advanced degreed technicians, researchers, and administrators.   Situated along the Brays Bayou 3 miles south of the Central Business District, the Texas Medical Center is bordered by the Museum District, Rice University, Hermann Park, and NRG Park.   The motto for the medical center is fitting, "World leaders in patient care, research, education, and prevention since 1945."
